Nissan LEAF, Toyota bZ & Subaru Solterra Home Charging: Port, Circuit & Charger
These three affordable EV families split on the one thing that decides which home charger you buy. The 2026 Nissan LEAF keeps a J1772 port for home charging, while Toyota’s bZ models and Subaru’s EVs moved to NACS and come with adapters. Every figure below is from Nissan’s, Toyota’s and Subaru’s own pages, linked at the end.
| Vehicle | Home charging port | Onboard AC charger | Full-speed install |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Nissan LEAF | J1772 (NACS is for DC fast charging) | 7.2 kW | 32A charger, 40A circuit |
| 2026–2027 Toyota bZ | NACS (J1772 adapter included) | 11 kW | 48A charger, 60A circuit |
| 2026 Toyota bZ Woodland | NACS (J1772 adapter included) | 11 kW | 48A charger, 60A circuit |
| 2027 Toyota C-HR (electric) | NACS (J1772 adapter included) | 11 kW | 48A charger, 60A circuit |
| 2026–2027 Subaru Solterra | NACS (J1772 adapter included) | 11 kW | 48A charger, 60A circuit |
| 2026 Subaru Uncharted | NACS (J1772 adapter included) | 11 kW | 48A charger, 60A circuit |
| 2027 Subaru Trailseeker | NACS (J1772 adapter included) | 11 kW | 48A charger, 60A circuit |
Nissan LEAF: Keep It Simple With J1772
Nissan’s press kit describes a J1772 charge port on the driver’s-side fender “for plugging in at home and many Level 2 public chargers,” and a separate NACS port on the passenger side for DC fast charging. So a standard J1772 Level 2 charger plugs straight in — no adapter.
The LEAF’s onboard charger is 7.2 kW on every US trim. Nissan does not state an amperage, but 7.2 kW at 240V is about 30 amps, so a 32A charger on a 40A circuit delivers all of it. A bigger charger costs more wire without charging the LEAF any faster. A 2027 LEAF with an 11 kW charger has so far been announced for Canada only.
Toyota bZ, bZ Woodland & C-HR: NACS at 11 kW
Toyota says the bZ “adopts a NACS charging port” for 2026, with an 11 kW onboard charger — up from 7 kW on the earlier bZ4X. The bZ Woodland and the 2027 electric C-HR also have NACS ports and 11 kW chargers. Toyota includes J1772 and CCS adapters, so either kind of home charger works; a NACS charger avoids the adapter.
Toyota’s Treehouse installation program offers a hardwired ChargePoint Home Flex with a NACS plug for 2026-and-newer Toyota EVs. You can also hire your own electrician — any listed 48A Level 2 charger with the right plug charges these cars at the same rate.
Subaru Solterra, Uncharted & Trailseeker
Subaru’s EVs follow the same pattern: NACS ports and 11 kW onboard chargers on the Solterra, Uncharted and Trailseeker. Subaru’s 2027 Trailseeker spec sheet lists J1772-to-NACS and CCS1-to-NACS adapters as standard, and quotes its home charging time at “240V at 48A” — the clearest manufacturer statement of what an 11 kW car needs.
Circuit Size for an 11 kW Car
11 kW at 240V is about 46 amps, so a 48A charger delivers the full rate. EV charging is a continuous load, and the circuit must be rated at 125% of the charging current — a 48A charger needs a dedicated 60A circuit. If your panel cannot spare 60A, a plug-in charger on a NEMA 14-50 outlet is limited to 40A (about 9.6 kW), which still charges overnight for most daily driving. See do you need a panel upgrade.
What Installation Involves
- Panel check — can it carry a new 40A (LEAF) or 60A (11 kW) circuit?
- Permit — pulled by your electrician; see who issues EV charger permits in your city.
- Circuit and charger — a dedicated 240V run, then the charger mounted and connected.
- Inspection — the permit closes after the local inspection.
Cost depends mostly on the distance from your panel and whether it has room — see EV charger installation cost and rebates by state.
Frequently Asked Questions
What home charger does the 2026 Nissan LEAF need?
A J1772 Level 2 charger. The 2026 LEAF has a J1772 port for home and Level 2 charging and a separate NACS port for DC fast charging, so a J1772 charger plugs straight in with no adapter. Its onboard charger is 7.2 kW, which works out to about 30 amps at 240V — a 32A charger on a 40A circuit delivers everything it can take.
Does the Toyota bZ have a NACS port?
Yes, from the 2026 model year. Toyota says the bZ adopted a NACS charging port for 2026 and that each bZ comes with an adapter kit for J1772 and CCS stations, so it can use either kind of home charger.
What size circuit does an 11 kW EV need?
11 kW at 240V is about 46 amps, so a 48A charger delivers the full rate — Subaru’s own Trailseeker spec sheet quotes its charging time at 240V and 48A. EV charging is a continuous load, so a 48A charger needs a dedicated 60A circuit.
Do I need a permit to install a home EV charger?
Almost always, if the job adds a 240V circuit. Your licensed electrician pulls the permit; our permits guide lists who issues it city by city.
